Classic cars – even the name gives goose bumps to the good old car enthusiast. I went through the comments made on classic car articles and wondered what made those old “sporties” so cool over the modern super speedy marvels.
In short, the modern cars are full of automated mechanisms, even you don’t have to touch a screen – just wave your hand in front of it, and …
It responds.
The convenience is that utmost. Controlled mostly by the sensors, the cars give smooth drives in extreme terrains, and of course, with extreme blare. Many safety mechanisms – sensors, cameras, airbags and many more – installed to protect the occupants, modern exotic cars are made for fuel efficiency also. Designs computer-aided, simply gives some celestial appearance, rather than to an earthly machine.
Those good oldies don’t have a life-saving system in a collision. Comfort is comparatively low to the modern exotic cars. (Could it be the ultimate luxury available at that time?) The fuel consumption was high compared to contemporary models. Those are the arguments of people against old classic cars. Then why do they attract such huge biddings at auctions?
Despite all those drawbacks, there is still some magical nature in the classic drives. Mostly hand drawn designs and hand built artistic frames, the classics inspire an unspoken beauty in every aspect. Sturdy and elegant, the stability of the car gives confidence. Every part touched by a human seems the classics were made alive to have a spirit.
Just have a look at the Mercedes Benz 300SL – it is not 15,000 units a day mass-produced machine. Not at all a robotic apparatus waiting for you to sit inside to be driven off, the classic, invites you, to join the voyage.
First fuel injection model in the motor industry, the 300SL was known as the world’s fastest, especially recognized for its gull-wing doors. Even the latest version – Mercedes Benz SLS AMG -adopted many of its features. Those doors and front air inlets are borrowed from the classic car design.
The Rolls-Royce Phantom V is another classic example of grandeur. With a V8 engine, the classic car has a 4-speed automatic transmission system. The Phantom V was the choice of Queen Elizabeth (Queen mother) and Queen Elizabeth II also. A definite proof of the elegance, Rolls Royce Phantom V went to chauffeur the Governor of Hong Kong, the Shah of Iran and the Beatle member John Lennon.

Very limited changes made to the original exterior, newest model of Phantom displays why classics are above the exotic exotic cars. The models are perfect in design; they have all the basic mechanisms for a super drive. The difference is in added modern day mystical equipment.
While the modern toy like exotic cars revs the roads with a borrowed performance from computer-aided mechanisms, classics run along the road with its calm, solid, super confident voyage, giving the real excitement of a classic car ride to the occupants.
Roam around, with a majestic poise, classics never had to boast about their performance. With inherited perfection in appearance and in action, classic cars could be compared to the people with “old money”, who have a quiet, confident way of existence. The modern exotic cars instead had to add mystical components – a cry to grab the attention.
